General Information

Our department seeks to provide students and employees with the highest quality computing resources and services possible within our means. Whenever possible, we try to give the kind of personal attention to those in need that only a smaller school can. This is an overview of the major services and resources we provide.

Computer Labs

The computer lab is located in the basement of the library building and is divided into two teaching labs and one main lab. There are over 30 PC’s, a laser printer, a color inkjet printer, flatbed scanners and other equipment. Software available includes:

  • Microsoft Office 2007 (including Publisher)
  • WordPerfect Office 11
  • Finale 2004
  • PDF Creator
  • CD/DVD burning software
  • Assorted discipline-specific software

The main lab is staffed, during operating hours, by student lab assistants. The lab assistants are able to help you with most problems/questions. The main lab hours are:

Monday-Thursday

8am - 10pm

Friday

8am - 5pm

Saturday

10am - 6pm

Sunday

2pm - 10pm

(The lab is closed for Chapel from 9:45 am - 11:00 am Monday, Wednesday, and Friday)

Teaching Labs

The main computer lab can be divided into two separate teaching labs. This allows faculty to provide instruction in a lab environment. Teaching Lab #1 has eight computers. If students share a computer this lab can host up to sixteen students at a time. Teaching Lab #2 has twelve computers. The teaching labs, like all other A/V equipment, should be reserved at least 24 hours in advance.

Any special software required in the lab must be installed by the Information Systems Group. Please give us at least two weeks notice of any special installation requirements. If we need to order software for your class please give us at least six weeks notice.

Email

Email is one of the main methods of communication on campus. Every student at Corban is given an email address. Our naming convention for email addresses is as follows:

  • For Students — FirstNameLastName@corban.edu
  • For Employees — FirstInitialLastName@corban.edu

To avoid confusion we use your full legal name (the name that appears on your student records).

Your school email account can be accessed from any computer in the world with an internet connection by going to http://webmail.corban.edu and logging in just as you would on campus. If you wish to use a separate client, go to our HowTo page that describes how to configure most clients.

Internet Access

Access to the internet is an important part of the college experience. It provides instant access to information and study resources, plus communication with friends and family or games when your schoolwork is done (your schoolwork is done, right?). It is simplest to connect when you are on campus, whether from a dorm room or another similarly enabled building. Currently we also provide connections in all dorm rooms, the coffee shop and the library.

Wired Connections: Each dorm room has one ethernet jack available per occupant. They are the ones that look like large, blue phone jacks. Please do not plug in modems or phones into these jacks. Simply plug a network cable into the wall jack and into the ethernet port on your computer and you should be ready to go. We provide network cables if you do not already have one.

Wireless Connections: In addition, we also provide wireless connectivity in all our major buildings (except for classrooms). To connect, select the CIS_WIRELESS network on your computer and open a web browser. The first time you try to access a page, you will be redirected to a login page. Enter a valid Corban login here and you will be authenticated on our wireless network.

Dial-Up Connections: There remain some situations where the only means to connect is using a modem and a phone line. We continue to support dial-up users to provide an all-else-fails connection option. If you find yourself in this situation, please see our dial-up HowTo instructions for further information.

Please remember that by attaching yourself to our network you are agreeing to abide by our Acceptable Usage Policy.

Personal Web Page Hosting

As an added bonus to students and staff we allocate space on one of our web server for your personal web pages. The site is located at http://defiant.corban.edu and can be viewed by anyone. You alone can edit the pages (with our help if necessary). To request a personal web page either email us or stop by the Technology Center.

Technical Support

We offer a range of support options to our students. If you are having computer related problems come see us and we will do our best to see that you get up and running again. Most problems can be solved free of charge. We will notify you otherwise before proceeding.
